Traditional classrooms aren’t working

“Traditional classrooms…really don’t reach every child,” says David Thornburg, award-winning futurist and author, “not because of teachers, not because of anything the teacher is doing, so much as the actual physical structure of the room.”

In a new video from Edutopia, Thornburg makes a case for his “holodeck” classroom (pdf), an environment that supports project-based learning that was inspired by the TV series, “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Thornburg talks about this and why the role of the teacher must change from lecturer to exploration guide.

Thornburg is founder and director of global operations for the Thornburg Center for Space Exploration. The center provides programs, workshops and consulting based on inquiry-driven project-based learning.
