A new Iowa Future video, “Iowa, Did You Know?,” highlights the drastic changes occurring in Iowa and the world, and shows that schools are struggling to keep up in today’s dynamic new global environment. The video premiered at this week’s School Administrators of Iowa Conference.

This fast-paced video emphasizes the magnitude of the challenges ahead, the need for Iowans to support the changes that schools must make if our learners are to be career, college, and citizenship ready, and the imperative to do this now, rather than later.

The seven-minute presentation is aimed at all Iowans, from all walks of life. It may be used with a variety of audiences, including students, parents, community members, school board members, legislators—virtually anyone with an interest or a stake in Iowa’s education future.

The “Iowa Did You Know?” video is the latest of a growing number of resources in the Iowa Future toolkit to provide school and community members with information and tools to help them lead or participate in education change efforts in their communities.

Scott McLeod authored “Iowa, Did You Know?” which is based on the popular general “Did You Know?” series written by Scott and others.

Watch the video below or on the YouTube Iowa Future channel. Following the viewing considering using the accompanying discussion guide to begin an in-depth conversation in your group. The guide is designed to be used with all types of groups, educators and noneducators alike. Also available to provide for more thorough study and review, is a pdf of all of the 87 “Iowa, Did You Know” slides.

What are you people thinking? Social media is the bane of the school system. Policies are springing up everywhere to limit its use. And “critical thinking” is a Marxist product developed at the Franfurt school in Germany. Look it up sheeple.

The authors of this video are to be commended for bringing in all the facts regardingthe major changes taking place. Our society needs to pick up the pace just to keep up much less advance. As a grandparent I'm prepared to do what ever is necessary for my grandchildren to be prepared for their future. Tell us how we can encourage our leaders to get on the stick and make the needed changes. Maybe school foundations need to be more agressive and resourceful to rally our citizens to support these necessary changes.

We are sharing this with all staff tomorrow, our first day back-- and then again next week at the Board of Education meeting. This video drives home how important it is for us to think differently about education- and to act accordingly. Change comes first through a sense of urgency; this is it.

Thanks again for bringing to the surface what all administrators, parents, teachers and Iowans need to hear! A powerful message in not only why we to change, but when to make it happen! NOW! We owe it to our children!

[...] Take a look at the video and see what you think. Even if you don’t live in Iowa, I think you’ll find it quite pertinent to your educational context too. More thoughts and resources after the video…http://www.iowafuture.org/2011/08/04/iowa-did-you-know/“ [...]

Another incredible job by Dr. Scott McLeod in presenting the facts, and motivation to give everyone a clear idea what direction we need to be heading. Critical thinking - problem solving and expanding expectations for achievement in school that leads to more pursuing post-secondary degrees. The testing issues need to move from a lower-order of proficiency to one that completely assess a student. Shift happens and it's happening in small schools all over the state.

Great techo music! I am blind and I got nothing from this video about the future of Iowa. I thought this group could do a little better at making media accesible.
